#1 Papa Kona Restaurant & Bar – Laid-back oceanfront restaurant with an international menu and live music

Address: The Waterfront Row, 75-5770 Ali‘i Dr 1st Floor, Kailua-Kona, HI 96740

This is my favorite Kona restaurant with a view because I love the fun-loving atmosphere, friendly service, and authentic music. For me, this is an underrated spot that has a lot to offer. Located right on the shoreline the covered terrace offers stunning views. But most of all they serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and the food is awesome.

This is a spot worth visiting multiple times on your trip, and we frequent it for both breakfast and dinner. I am an early bird, so I love that they start serving breakfast at 7:00 am. My favorites are the French toast with seasonal fruit, syrup, and butter and the hardy meat lovers omelet including three eggs, ham, Portuguese sausage, bacon, cheddar, potatoes, and toast. Whatever you choose, it’s a hearty and flavorful meal.

Dinner here is top-notch. You can enjoy a perfect sunset backdrop while dining in a spacious and private atmosphere. The open-air seating is romantically lit at night and offers opportunities for great conversation, attentive service, and great food. My favorite off-the-dinner menu is the Sesame seared Ahi with pickled cucumber, red onion, and coconut rice. I also love their grilled pork chop with mushrooms, caramelized onions, steamed rice, and green beans. The flavors are amazing and fresh.

Make sure to grab a meal at the Papa Kona Restaurant & Bar because:

  • The venue, view, and atmosphere are beach and beautiful.
  • The food for each meal is simple, casual, and delicious.
  • Service is top notch and the casual atmosphere helps you feel the true Hawaiian spirit.

#2 Huggo’s Restaurant – American staple food with waterfront tiki drinks and live entertainment.

Address: 5308, 75-5828 Kahakai Rd, Kailua-Kona, HI 96740

If you love high-quality food, service, and an atmosphere not overrun by tourists, this is your number one spot. In fact, it’s my close second pick as well. Huggo’s Restaurant has a stunning view and the perfect combination of Hawaiian and traditional food combinations. The restaurant has been in business since the late 60s and is frequented by the locals.

The restaurant has a top-notch liquid happy hour menu for the bar and a quality dinner menu. The atmosphere is both high-end and casual. Some guests choose to dress up, while others wear casual attire. Whatever you choose, you will fit in.

I love the fresh daily fish served here. Try the Sashimi or Cajun seared Sashimi with fresh-off-the-boat Ahi, pickled ginger, and wasabi. They also have the legendary teriyaki steak they have been serving forever. Huggo’s signature Teriyaki Steak is

sliced island-style steak in their special marinade. We love it every time we come here.

Overall the sunset view is breathtaking, the food is well-portioned and tasty. The cocktails are strong and perfect for a night out in Hawaii. Service is quick and friendly.

Huggo’s Restaurant is a great dinner and cocktail choice with a beachfront view. We love them because:

  • The food is fresh, local, and perfectly prepared. The portions are large and filling.
  • The view is perfect including the dreamy picturesque sunset you search for in Hawaii.
  • This is a long-running restaurant popular with locals and tourists.
  • It’s a good spot for both casual dining and dressing up for a romantic dinner.

#3 Don’s Mai Tai Bar & Restaurant – Oceanfront, Open-air, tiki-style bar at Royal Kona Resort

Address: 75-5852 Ali‘i Dr, Kailua-Kona, HI 96740

If you are looking to watch the ocean waves and dazzling sunsets as you enjoy your favorite cocktail and meal – this is the spot for you. I love them for the friendly service and fresh food. But the view is incredible and the space is perfectly decorated.

I love this place for lunch. And I appreciate that they serve breakfast, lunch, happy hour, and dinner. They even have live music once a week. The food served here comes in nice large portions and is super fresh and filling. The tastes are a mix of authentic Hawaiian and traditional. Much of the food (especially fish) is locally sourced and sustainable. My favorite lunch items are the fish tacos (it might be the best fish tacos in Kona), the Royal Poke plate (Yummy!), and Calamari Fritters with awesome dipping sauce.

They also have incredible cocktails so don’t miss the Lava flow flight or the Mai Tai flight. They are both tropical, tasty, and strong. Walk-ins are welcome, but reservations are preferred (especially for dinner). I have had nothing but good experiences here. Not to mention the powerful ocean view.

Check out Don’s Mai Tai Bar & Restaurant restaurant because:

  • The food and atmosphere perfectly embody the beach Hawaiian spirit.
  • They serve all three meals a day and have a happy hour menu.
  • Much of the ingredients and fish are locally sourced.
  • The open ocean view is gorgeous and the service is friendly, helpful, and accommodating.
