#1 Maui Haleakala Sunrise Downhill Bike Tour with Mountain Riders Rated

Duration: 8 hours (approx.)

Address: 886 Haliimaile Rd, Makawao, HI 96768

The Haleakala sunrise is one of the most beautiful sights in the world. No matter what you choose to do on your Maui vacation – the sunrise is a can’t-miss event. It’s even better when you get the chance to combine an exhilarating bike ride with a professional team.

We were picked up early and made our way in the dark up to the 10,000-foot summit. Very soon the sun started coming out and the gorgeous yellow, orange, and red colors swirled beneath us. I didn’t feel rushed, and we took our time enjoying the full sunrise (i even had a nice snack!) Bring a jacket and hat, because the top of the mountain is cold.

The ride down the dormant volcano was exhilarating and with lots of adrenaline. The instructor was very professional and it was easy to keep as a group. We made several stops including Haleakala National Park, and Makawao Town, and passed by Kula. The sights were gorgeous with lots of vegetation, stunning sights of both jungle, cliffsides and ocean. Makawao Town was special because it’s filled with authentic local shops and food vendors. We had breakfast here. It was a chance to mingle with locals (a nice change from the crowded tourist spots).

I also enjoyed that the bike group was relatively small (there were 10 of us) and it can be couples or family activity. Older children are able to do the ride. Some physical fitness is expected, I think the ride is about 25 miles or more. However, the instructors are awesome and motivating.

This is absolutely my number one pick because:

  • You get to experience the stunning Haleakala sunrise and see the Haleakala National Park.
  • The ride is exhilarating with a great instructor and support with reasonable stops and amazing views of forests, cliffs, and the ocean.
  • The stop in Makawao Town is an opportunity to see the more authentic side of the island.
  • The tour is suitable for families with older kids. It’s a worthwhile full-day activity.

#2 Haleakala Sunrise Best Guided Bike Tour with Bike Maui

Duration: 8 hours (approx.)

Address: Haiku Marketplace 810 Haiku Rd suite 120, Haiku, HI. 96708 (Haleakala Bike Co sign)

We did this bike tour on our second trip to Maui and it was amazing. The ride up to the Haleakala National Park was fun and comfortable. We made it with plenty of time to watch the breathtaking sunrise and it was a clear day, so the colors were stunning. I didn’t feel rushed and the atmosphere was great since we had been up to the summit before we knew to wear hats, jackets, and extra warm clothing that could later fit in our packs.

What sets this tour apart is the great staff and instructors that really take care of the riders. They even provide windbreakers if needed. There were about 15 riders all together in our group and it was not difficult to keep up. Some people even had older children riding (early teens I would say).

We had several stops and took some stunning pictures as we rode down the volcano. They were really one of a kind.

There was a stop in Makawao Town where we had delicious breakfast and I even got a few small souvenirs. It was a beautiful sunny day with lots of local vendors out (bring some cash and sun protection).

The overall trip took about 7.5 hours and I honestly felt great at the end. We were all full of adrenaline and reaching the ocean felt like a team accomplishment. Overall a great group and atmosphere.

This is the second-best bike tour in Maui because:

  • There is a perfectly organized ride to the Haleakala summit to enjoy one of the world’s most beautiful sunrises.
  • Everything is well-planned, the organization is top notch and the tour guides are friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful.
  • This activity is suited for single riders, families with teen children, and couples (like us!)
  • The views are awesome, with lush jungles, cliffsides, and different ocean views.
  • There is a stop in Makawao Town as an added bonus.

#3 Cycle to the Sea

Duration: 5 hours (approx.)

Address: 100 Ho’okele St, Kahului, HI 96732 (meet between Target and Lowe’s)

Link: https://www.viator.com/tours/Maui/Cycle-to-the-Sea/d671-85881P1

I liked this tour because it was well organized so that it took about half a day (5 hours) and it gave us the opportunity to enjoy the beach for the second half of the day. The tour started at around 8 am and they were very well organized.

It’s one of the most peaceful rides on the island with a 26-mile (42-kilometer) descent. The bikes are in excellent condition and suitable for most. Also the instructors are top notch.Unlike many tours, they also provide helmets, gloves, and windbreakers. As a bonus we really enjoyed the included lunch, snacks and beverages (although i like to bring plenty of my own water.)

This is also the smallest group tour we did. It was a group of only 6 riders, and everyone worked great as a team and kept safe.

This is a great and less strenuous activity for families and accompanied children. Although it’s perfect for couples too. The views are stunning and we took some amazing pictures. Since it was a morning ride, there was almost no traffic at all (very safe). The tour is operated by Maui Bombers.

Don’t miss out on the Cycle to the Sea tour because:

  • It’s a less demanding half-day tour with a beautiful view of the Haleakala volcano side, jungle and ocean view.
  • The ride is in the morning hours where there is very little traffic, and the groups are very small (up to 6 people).
  • Service is top notch and the instructors are professional and friendly.

Conclusion

Maui is an adventure lover’s paradise. It offers exotic trails and hikes through pristine jungles, stunning waterfalls, white sand beaches and the breathtaking Haleakala volcano. With so many trails and options, it’s also a bike lover’s paradise.

I have been lucky to do many of the best bike tours and can guarantee i’ve done most of the best:

For a family or couples adventure don’t miss out on my top 3 recommendations. They are all well worth it.

Enjoy your trip!
