Best Breakfast in Maui 2023

Welcome to the best breakfast guide in Maui!

Exploring the beautiful island of Maui requires serious fuel, especially if you’re planning on hiking scenic trails or swimming through strong tides at the beaches. That’s why my boyfriend and I made it a point to visit as many breakfast joints as possible during our last vacation on the island.

From upscale cafes serving drool-worthy pancakes and waffles to local places with the yummiest loco moco, we tried it all and included it in this guide to help you find the best spots for a fulfilling meal to kickstart your day of adventure.

Maui has some of the best breakfast joints in Hawaii, open as early as 6 am and serving delicious American and Hawaiian breakfasts all day long. We spent a month exploring these different joints, talking to locals, and trying out as many options as possible.

Our goal with this guide is to save time and help you make the best choice for a delicious breakfast on the island. We’ve ranked these spots according to taste, service, ambiance, and value so you can choose the perfect place to start your day off right.

So let’s get right into it and explore the best breakfast spots in Maui!

Kula Bistro – Best Breakfast in Maui

Kula Bistro is a relatively new establishment in Maui and serves excellent breakfast all day long. If you only have time to eat at one breakfast place on your trip, let it be here. Since it’s on the way to Haleakala National Park, people stop by to grab a bite before or after the trip.

They have delicious fluffy pancakes in blueberry and macadamia nuts that are gigantic and very flavorful. However, the prize is their melt-in-your-mouth Eggs Benedict which comes with hash browns or Mahi Mahi.

Another favorite item is their Cajun Mahi Mahi sandwich on focaccia, that’s absolutely divine! I had it with their fresh brew, and it was the best breakfast combo.

You’ll love Kula Bistro for the range of items on their menu and the best breakfast in Maui.

  • Kula Bistro has a prominent display case filled with 30+ types of homemade pies and cakes.
  • Their range of sandwiches and paninis is a crowd favorite.
  • They open at 7 am and are a quaint little cafe with attentive servers.

Address: 4566 Lower Kula Rd, Kula, Maui, HI 96790-8123.

Gazebo – Best Breakfast Lahaina, Maui

The Gazebo is a famous restaurant for its off-the-beaten-path location and a great variety of menu items for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. However, the view here is what you want to come for, which looks directly at the ocean since Gazebo is nestled off the Napili shores.

A local favorite is their fried rice, which comes with chunks of sausage, eggs, and veggies. We also tried their fluffy banana macadamia nut pancakes, soaked in coconut syrup and topped with fresh fruit and whipped cream. The combination and flavors were insanely delicious! A must-try for pancake lovers.

However, you’ll want to come here early to enjoy the food and views since it’s a small cafe that fills up quickly. To avoid lines, get takeout or take away and eat it on the gorgeous beach.

Despite the wait, the food is fresh and makes it to the top of our list of best breakfasts in Maui.

  • No matter which mealtime you go at, the smell of the ocean makes the food taste ten times better.
  • They have huge portion sizes and reasonable prices.
  • Their wait staff is efficient and prepares the food within 15 minutes of placing your order.

Address: 5315 Lower Honoapiilani Rd Napili Shores, Lahaina, Maui, HI 96761-9005.

Kihei Caffe – Best Breakfast Kihei, Maui

A small cafe with street-side seating and views of the bustling markets outside – Kihei Caffe is the most famous breakfast joint in Kihei. However, since it’s always crowded with locals and tourists, you have to wait a short while to place your order.

Their Kalua-style loco moco is a house specialty, which comes with shredded pork instead of a ground beef patty, topped with delicious savory gravy and sunny-side up eggs. My boyfriend and I love their loco moco and used to come at 6 am on their opening to have it fresh.

However, they also have excellent traditional breakfast options like cinnamon roll French toasts doused in coconut syrup that are the perfect balance of sweet and spicy. And homemade biscuits soaked in fresh gravy are strong contenders to the loco moco.

You’ll leave with a happy stomach no matter what you order at Kihei Caffe.

  • The prices are incredibly cheap at $10-16 per person.
  • Try their impressive 2-2-2, which is two eggs, bacon, and french toast each.
  • The lines outside the restaurant move quickly because of their efficient servers, and you get a seat as soon as someone finishes.

Baked On Maui – Best Breakfast Haiku, Maui

Baked On Maui is the most-loved bakery in Haiku, with a decadent range of pastries and bread. However, their breakfast is equally famous and includes freshly baked items like buttered scones and soft bagels. I guarantee you’ll come here every day after trying their baked goods.

Their Fully Loaded Waffles are crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and come topped with berry coulis, chocolate chips, and a drizzle of caramel.

Other great breakfast items include pancakes served with fresh fruit and delicious omelets.

My boyfriend loves their bagels and always gets the smoked salmon and cream cheese stuffed bagel, which is ridiculously good!

You’ll become obsessed with this adorable little bakery and keep coming back since it has the best breakfast in Maui.

  • Their menu also has some gluten-free options.
  • They have excellent coffees and cappuccinos.
  • There’s outdoor seating on tables under umbrellas.

Choice Health Bar – Best Vegan & Gluten-free Breakfast Maui

Whether you’re a healthy eater, vegan, or on a gluten-free diet, Choice Health Bar is the only place you need to visit. Their excellent food has a unique flavor profile and does justice to clean cooking and eating. Even though we’re not vegans, this place is on our top-10 breakfast list for its tasty food.

Their fresh smoothies, juices, acai bowls, and kale salad are super yummy, made with organic ingredients, and usually what most people order here.

However, their savory menu is even better. Try the flavorful Benny-Mac Loco Moco made with toasted black bean & walnut burger patties, served on turmeric basmati golden rice, topped with cashew cheese, fresh veggies, and a sesame almond slaw.

You’ll love Choice Health Bar for their cooking with a conscience and tasty breakfasts.

  • They have a range of tortilla wraps, Buddha bowls, and a delicious Soba Noodle bowl.

  • They fill up fast and have long lines, so come early.

Paia Bay Coffee Bar – Best Breakfast Paia Maui

The small town of Paia has a lot of quaint cafes, and Paia Bay Coffee Bar tops them all. They often have live music and events at the Bar, which gives them a great atmosphere to eat in.

The bagels are incredible from their range of breakfast items: super soft and tender, smothered with tomatoes and cream cheese, or cheese and avocados. In fact, you can get their bagels on the side with dishes like the egg and goat cheese platter, which makes it taste ten times better.

Paia Bay Coffee Bar is a great spot to grab breakfast and strong coffee before taking the Road to Hana (and maybe on the way back too). Just remember to get dessert to-go since their Nutella banana croissant is an absolute treat!

We loved this adorable cafe and recommend everyone coming to Paia to stop here and enjoy the best breakfast in Maui.

  • They serve alcoholic drinks here, like tropical-inspired cocktails.
  • The menu has good gluten-free and vegan options.
  • Their smashed avocado on seeded bread is terrific.

Down the Hatch – Best Breakfast Lahaina Maui

If you’re looking for non-conventional but delicious breakfasts, don’t miss Down the Hatch in Lahaina, Maui. Their breakfast menu is seafood-based, and every item comes packed with flavor.

However, breakfast is between 7:30 am – 11 am, so come early and enjoy tasty food with live music in the background.

An excellent breakfast option is their Spinach Summer Salad made with fresh catch that’s well-seasoned and the Captain’s Catch Cajun style.

We tried their omelet with avocado and shrimp for the first time and never knew eggs paired so well with seafood!

And if that wasn’t enough, their lobster and grilled cheese sandwiches were featured on Diners Drive-ins and Dives.

The seafood at Down the Hatch makes for some of the best breakfast in Maui.

  • There’s usually a long line here, but it moves quickly, and you get seated after placing your order.
  • The portion sizes were huge, and prices were reasonable for fresh seafood.

  • Their macadamia nut iced coffee is to die for!

Colleen’s at The Cannery

Colleen’s is the perfect place to get a cheap, good-quality breakfast that’s traditional and delicious. They’re also a favorite spot for families and young children with their range of breakfast items.

Colleen’s has everything from delicious pancakes, waffles, and omelets to the best coffee in Haiku. We especially loved the sweet-bread French toast topped with syrup and their flaky croissants stuffed with fresh cheese, eggs, and veggies.

A local favorite is the Cannery special breakfast which is eggs, potatoes, and toast for $9, that looks simple but has perfect seasoning and huge portion sizes.

Overall, this is a great place to stop for a cuppa Joe and stay for a hearty breakfast.

  • The chef, Colleen, is really nice and talks to you about Maui’s history if you ask.
